Crib Goch

The knife-edge ridge that is Crib Goch demands respect. This is not a gentle woodland stroll - it's a proper scramble along one of Snowdonia's most exposed ridges, with sheer drops on both sides that'll make your stomach flip if you're afraid of heights. Most people tackle it as part of the Snowdon horseshoe circuit, approaching from Llyn Cwm-y-Glas, and the adrenaline hit when you first see that narrow spine of rock is something you don't forget.

The scramble itself takes around an hour, depending on your nerve and climbing ability. You'll use hands as much as feet, picking your way across loose stone and rock with the valley floor a dizzying distance below. It's exhilarating rather than genuinely dangerous if you're steady on your feet and take your time - but it's absolutely not the walk for families with young children or anyone uncomfortable with exposure.

Seasoned fell walkers and scrambling enthusiasts will find this utterly compelling. The views across Snowdonia are immense. Caernarfon sits below in the distance, and on a clear day you can see right across to the coast. Winter ascents require proper winter kit and experience - people have died here in bad conditions, which sounds dramatic but it's true.

Based near Llanberis or Beddgelert Campsite, Crib Goch slots perfectly into a longer Snowdon day. Allow at least five hours for the full horseshoe. It's free, always open, and genuinely one of North Wales' most rewarding walks - though only if you've got the head for heights.
