Ynys Lochtyn Defended Enclosure

You won't find much signage when you stumble upon Ynys Lochtyn, and that's rather the point. This Iron Age defended enclosure sits on a promontory near Llandysul in Ceredigion, a place where you can still read the landscape like an archaeological text - if you know what you're looking at.

The site consists of a series of earthworks and ditches that once formed a fortified settlement, probably occupied sometime between 800 and 100 BC. Walking around the site, you can make out the defensive lines that would have protected whoever lived here from the hillfort's vantage point. It's not dramatic in the way some Iron Age sites are - no towering ramparts or visitor centres - but that's exactly why it matters to serious archaeology enthusiasts and anyone keen to understand how people actually inhabited this part of Wales.

This is squarely for walkers and history types rather than families after a quick stop. You'll need to think about what you're seeing and be prepared for rough ground and potentially boggy conditions depending on when you visit. Allow a solid hour to properly explore and absorb the site without rushing.

Parking is limited and access isn't formally managed, so arrive early and check local conditions beforehand. If you're camping at Cardigan Bay or Ty Rhos Farm nearby, it makes for a rewarding afternoon excursion away from the usual tourist trail. The broader Ceredigion coast offers plenty of other diversions - you won't be stuck for things to do if the weather turns.
