Ynys Ifan

The walk up Ynys Ifan from Talsarnau is short, sharp, and absolutely worth the huffing and puffing. You're looking at a proper little peak that commands views across the Snowdonia foothills - on a clear day you can pick out the mountains properly stacked up to the north. The route itself is straightforward enough, though the final push is genuinely steep; allow 45 minutes up, maybe 30 back down if your knees are forgiving.

This one's brilliant for families who want something more substantial than a stroll but aren't ready for a full day in the mountains. Kids get the satisfaction of reaching a proper summit without needing proper kit, and the views are good enough that they won't feel cheated. Walkers doing longer circuits through the area will find it a satisfying detour rather than a destination in itself.

Camp nearby at Beddgelert Campsite or Haven Greenacres, both within five miles, and you've got a solid base for exploring this corner of Gwynedd. Black Rock Sands Touring and Camping Park is slightly further but worth considering if you want beach access alongside your hill walking. The walk is free, no restrictions that I'm aware of, and you can do it any time. Early morning beats the afternoon crowds - and there are crowds, because locals know a good thing when they see it.
