Y Rhaeadr Fawr

Y Rhaeadr Fawr is a proper waterfall, and it's the kind of walk that rewards you with something genuinely worth seeing. Near Llanfairfechan, you're trekking through decent Welsh countryside to reach a cascade that drops through wooded slopes - the sort of place where the sound of falling water hits you before you round the final bend.

It's a straightforward outing for anyone reasonably fit. The walk itself is the main event; allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the base. The fall isn't a single dramatic plunge but more of a rushing drop through rocks and moss-covered stone - atmospheric rather than jaw-dropping. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the approach a bit of a slog, though the novelty of a "proper" Welsh mountain stream keeps most entertained.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Three Streams Glamping, Ogwen Bank, or Craiglwyd Hall are all within a few miles - this works as a solid half-day walk without needing to venture far. It's the sort of local pull that breaks up a park holiday nicely. Mornings are better when the light filters through the trees and the falls have more water in them. After heavy rain it's impressive; in dry spells it's more modest but still worth the trek.
