Y Golfa

Standing at 470 metres, this grassy hilltop offers one of the finest panoramic views across the Severn Valley and into Shropshire beyond. The climb from Welshpool takes about 90 minutes on a well-marked footpath that winds through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper walk will find the effort well rewarded - the views stretch for miles on a clear day, taking in the Breidden Hills and Long Mountain. Younger kids might struggle with the distance and steepness towards the summit.

Pack a thermos and sandwiches because there's nowhere to grab refreshments once you start climbing. Early morning is your best bet for clearer air and fewer people, though the path can get muddy after rain. The final push to the trig point is the steepest bit, but manageable for anyone reasonably fit.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Welshpool makes this an excellent half-day adventure. Hidden Valley Holiday Home Park and Derwen Mill Holiday Park are both within easy reach, giving you a comfortable base to return to after working up an appetite on the slopes. Allow three hours return from the town centre, or longer if you're planning a proper picnic at the top.
