Llyn Ddu

Dark water surrounded by moorland - that's Llyn Ddu, a small lake just outside Welshpool in Powys that hardly gets a mention in the guidebooks. The name means Black Lake in Welsh, and on an overcast day you'll understand why. It's not a massive attraction, and that's rather the point. You're looking at a quiet spot for a walk round the water's edge, maybe casting a line if you're into fishing, or simply sitting on the bank with a coffee and watching the light change across the surface.

This is proper walker territory rather than a destination for the camera-happy crowds. The surrounding moorland is open and exposed - bring a windproof jacket. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit, longer if you're stopping to sketch or photograph. There's no visitor centre, no tea shop, no facilities to speak of. It's free to visit, naturally.

For families staying at Hidden Valley Holiday Home Park or Valley View Holiday Park just 1.5 miles away, it's a straightforward morning outing before lunch. Older kids who don't mind a walk without constant entertainment will get more from it than toddlers. The moorland setting also makes it worth combining with other local spots - Welshpool itself is close enough for a market day visit. If you're based at one of the glamping spots like Oaklands further out, Llyn Ddu works as a quiet counterpoint to busier attractions in the area. Go on a clear day if you can. On grey days it's moody and atmospheric; in rain it's just wet.
