Powis Castle and Garden

The castle rises above Welshpool like something from a fever dream - all red stone and turrets clinging to a hillside that seems almost too steep to build on. Powis Castle is genuinely impressive, the kind of place where you round a corner and actually stop walking just to take it in.

Inside, the rooms are properly furnished rather than stripped bare like some castles. There's real character in the heavy wooden furniture, the paintings, the general sense that someone actually lived here - because they did, for centuries. The gardens are the real draw though. Tiered down the hillside in grand baroque fashion, they're meticulously maintained and absolutely stunning from spring through autumn. If you're into horticulture or just appreciate something well-kept, you'll spend longer here than you expected.

Historically minded adults will get the most from this. Kids might tire after an hour or so unless they're the type who enjoy exploring rooms and climbing stairs. It's owned by the National Trust, so expect the usual admission charge (check their website for current prices). Allow a good three to four hours if you're doing both house and gardens properly.

For a caravan holiday in the area, it sits nicely between Welshpool and the wider Powys countryside. Severn Caravan Resort Park is barely a mile away, making it a straightforward evening visit without the long drive back. The surrounding walks are decent too - you're properly in Welsh border country here, and that counts for something.
