Y Garnedd

The walk up Y Garnedd isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for it. From Talsarnau, you're looking at a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll - the kind where you'll feel your legs on the way down. The summit itself rewards the effort with sweeping views across the Snowdonia foothills and down towards the coast. On a clear day, you can see well beyond the immediate ridgeline.

This is walkers' territory. If you've got decent boots and a bit of fitness, you'll find it manageable in an hour or so, though most folk take longer to properly soak it in. The terrain is open moorland with patches of bracken - nothing technical, just relentless gradient. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a slog.

There's no charge to walk it, and you won't find facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. The nearby campsites - Barcdy, Llechwedd Glamping, Bryn Dinas, and Cae Du - all put you within striking distance for an early start. It's the sort of hill that works best visited either first thing in the morning or late afternoon when the light softens. Midday crowds are rare here, which is part of its appeal.

It's not a dramatic peak or a famous ridge walk. What it is, though, is honest moorland hiking with decent views and the kind of solitude you're increasingly unlikely to find in Snowdonia proper. Well worth including if you're based nearby.
