Y Garn

Getting up Y Garn takes roughly 90 minutes from the car park, and the payoff is proper views across Cardigan Bay. The walk itself climbs through moorland with minimal shelter - bring wind-proof kit even if it looks calm in Aberystwyth. From the summit you're looking at 600 metres of elevation, which doesn't sound much until you're doing it in Welsh weather.

This is a peak for walkers who actually want to walk, not sightseers after a gentle stroll. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine if they're used to hills. The route involves some scrambling near the top, nothing technical, but it's definitely not a push-chair affair. Families camped at Forester's Retreat Glamping or tyn ffordd fach campsite - both within 3.6 miles - could knock this out as a morning mission and have the afternoon free for the coast.

The mountain's part of the Cambrian range, wild country that feels properly remote despite Aberystwyth being close by. On clear days you get Snowdonia to the north and the Brecon Beacons inland. Weather here shifts fast though, so start early and don't rely on long spells of sunshine.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities at the top, no charge - it's mountain walking as it should be. Allow three hours there and back if you're not hurrying. Woodlands Caravan Park sits five miles away if you're basing yourself in the area. Worth doing if you're serious about walking; a bit much if you're after something casual.
