Wydon Water

Wydon Water sits just outside Hexham, a proper little reservoir that catches most visitors by surprise. It's not dramatic - no jagged peaks or thundering waterfalls - but there's something genuinely peaceful about the place that makes it worth the drive. The lake itself is ringed by woodland, with decent walking paths that loop around the water's edge. On a clear day the reflections are lovely, and if you time it right at dusk you might spot waterfowl settling in for the evening.

This is walker territory, really. You're looking at an hour's gentle circuit if you stick to the main path, though you can easily stretch it to two hours poking about the quieter sections. Families with younger kids will manage it without complaint - the terrain's straightforward and there are spots to stop and chuck stones. Don't expect facilities though; no cafes, no visitor centre, no changing rooms. Bring what you need.

The lake works well as part of a broader Hexham visit rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park nearby, it's a natural morning walk before heading into town proper. It's free and accessible year-round, which makes it an easy add-on when the weather's decent. Winter's actually atmospheric here - fewer people, moodier light on the water. Summer can feel slightly busier, but even then it's far quieter than the honeypot attractions.
