WWT Steart Marshes

The Steart Marshes near Bridgwater are one of those places that properly rewards you for making the effort. This is wetland habitat at its best - a sprawling nature reserve where the Somerset Levels meet the Severn Estuary, and it's been rewilded into something genuinely special. You get open water, reed beds, grassland, and a network of walking trails that actually feel like you're going somewhere.

Birdwatchers will have the time of their lives here. Lapwing, snipe, wigeon, and if you're lucky, the occasional rarity turn up depending on the season. The trails are flat and easy enough for families with young kids, though I'd warn you the weather can be brutal - it's exposed out there, and the wind whips across the marshes something fierce. Binoculars and patience are essential.

Allow at least two hours to do it justice, longer if you're serious about spotting birds. There's a visitor centre too, which usually has a café and information about what's about. The reserve is free to access, which is brilliant.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around Burnham-on-Sea or Bridgwater - Mill Farm is closest at just under three miles - this makes for a proper break from the caravan. It's not for everyone; this is genuine nature reserve stuff, not theme park attractions. But if you want a walk that actually feels like you've discovered something, rather than trudged around yet another managed beauty spot, Steart Marshes delivers.
