Home Covert

Home Covert is a proper woodland walk just outside Bridgwater, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard with how decent it actually is. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, the kind that deadens your footsteps and makes you want to whisper. You'll find yourself weaving between oak and beech, with enough dappled light filtering through to make the whole thing feel properly atmospheric without being gloomy.

It's ideal if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Burnham Holiday Village and Haven Burnham-on-Sea are both within five miles - and fancy a break from the flat coastal walks. The woodland is manageable for families with kids old enough not to need constant stopping, though younger ones might find it a bit repetitive after half an hour. Dog walkers absolutely love it. Allow a couple of hours if you're being leisurely, less if you're just after fresh air and a stretch of the legs.

What you won't find here is drama or views that'll make your jaw drop. This is gentle, restorative walking through genuine woodland. No facilities that I could spot, no car park signage, so you'll need to do a bit of detective work on the ground. It works best as a half-day addition to a bigger Somerset trip rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying in the Burnham area, absolutely worth the short drive. If you're just passing through, probably worth saving your time for the Quantocks or Exmoor.
