Wroxeter Roman City/Viroconium

Walking across this Shropshire field, you're treading on the remains of Viroconium, once the fourth-largest Roman city in Britain. What strikes you immediately is how little stands above ground - mostly just a red sandstone arch, the skeleton of a bathhouse, and scattered foundations visible in long grass. But that's rather the point. For archaeology enthusiasts, there's genuine magic in reconstructing a bustling Roman settlement from these fragmentary clues.

The site sprawls across open countryside near Shrewsbury, and you're free to wander the whole thing. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested; less if you're just passing through. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already keen on Roman history - there's no visitors' centre on-site, no reconstructions to spark imagination. Teenagers doing GCSE history will get more from it than a five-year-old.

What makes Wroxeter special isn't the spectacle but the scale. Shops, temples, administrative buildings - this was proper urban life under Roman rule. You can see where the forum stood, trace the streets. In summer, with wildflowers catching the light, it's quite lovely to walk around.
