Worts Hill

The walk up Worts Hill from Elland takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth your legs aching afterwards. You get proper views across the Calderdale Valley - the sort of panorama that makes you understand why people chose to live here centuries ago. The peak itself isn't dramatic, but that's rather the point. It's a working landscape, not a postcard moment, with moorland and rough grassland that changes colour depending on the season.

This is a walk for people who enjoy the graft. Families with young kids will find it a bit of a slog, and you won't want to bring a pushchair. But walkers who know the Pennines get it straight away - it's a proper leg-stretcher without needing to drive hours away. The nearest descent involves picking your way down moorland tracks, so wear decent boots.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow a couple of hours return if you're actually stopping to look around rather than just bagging another peak. Spring and early summer are best - the hill can be boggy and grey-brown in winter, which takes the shine off things.
