Woody Hill

The walk up Woody Hill isn't dramatic, but that's rather the point. You're in proper Dumfries & Galloway country here, rolling moorland that doesn't shout about itself, and the summit rewards you with views across the Scottish Lowlands that stretch for miles when the weather plays ball.

It's an easy enough hill walk from Lockerbie - nothing that requires technical skills or specialist kit. The path is straightforward, the climb manageable. You're looking at a couple of hours there and back if you set a reasonable pace, maybe a bit longer if you want to linger at the top. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a slog if they're not regular walkers.

What makes it work as part of a caravan holiday is the simplicity of it. You don't need to drive far - Cressfield and Hoddom Castle are both within easy reach of Lockerbie - and it's the sort of walk that doesn't demand half your day. Park up near the base, get your boots on, and you're sorted. The views are genuine, too. On a clear day you can see proper distance, which is exactly what you want from a hilltop.

There's nothing fancy here. No café, no visitor centre. That's genuinely fine. If you're the type who enjoys a straightforward moorland walk without the crowds or the infrastructure, Woody Hill delivers. It's honest terrain for an honest afternoon out.
