Newington Park

Newington Park is a proper nature reserve just outside Lockerbie, where you can actually get away from the caravans and into something green and genuinely wild. The place is all woodland walks and open grassland - the sort of landscape that makes you remember why you came to Dumfries and Galloway in the first place rather than staying put at Queensberry Bay or Hoddom Castle down the road.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. There are paths through mixed woodland with decent birdsong if you time it right, and the open areas give you proper views across the Lowlands. It's not dramatic scenery - no mountains, no lochs - but it's the kind of place that works best on a quiet weekday when you've got the space to yourself. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough; walkers will stretch it to two or three. The reserve is free to access, which is always welcome when you're budgeting a week away.

It fills a gap nicely between the more manicured holiday parks and the genuine countryside. If you're based at Glendale or Cressfield and want to shake off the site feel for an afternoon, Newington is the obvious choice. Don't expect cafes or facilities - bring what you need. Go early morning if you're interested in wildlife; the light's better anyway. It's not somewhere you'd plan a whole day around, but it's absolutely worth the short drive from Lockerbie if you want a proper walk without the fuss.
