You'll find a rather incongruous yellow-faced character spray-painted onto a wall in Lockerbie - yes, that's Bart Simpson, immortalised on a building that has absolutely nothing to do with animated American schoolboys. It's the sort of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you do a double-take. The mural's been there long enough to become part of the town's fabric, though frankly it's a bit random for the Scottish Lowlands.

This is a five-minute detour at most, really. You don't need to allow any time beyond what it takes to snap a photo and move on. It's free, obviously - it's a wall. The mural works best if you're already in Lockerbie for other reasons, perhaps stopping between the caravan parks scattered around Dumfries and Galloway. Hoddom Castle Caravan Park is just up the road if you're based that way, or Queensberry Bay if you fancy staying closer.

Who gets something out of it? Kids find it amusing, particularly if they've watched The Simpsons. Adults either think it's a laugh or wonder why on earth it's there at all. History buffs won't find much to chew on - it's modern street art in a town better known for other, grimmer historical events. The real value is as a quirky waypoint on a Scottish road trip, not a destination in itself. Worth a photo stop if you're passing through, but don't rearrange your itinerary around it.
