Woodbury Hill

Standing at 256 metres above the Severn Valley, this modest summit delivers proper views across Worcestershire's patchwork countryside without the crowds you'd find on the Malverns. The walk up from the small car park near Martley takes about 20 minutes through beech woodland before opening onto gorse-covered slopes. Once you reach the top, the panorama stretches from the Cotswolds to the Welsh hills on a clear day.

Families with older children will manage the ascent easily enough, though toddlers might find the final scramble a bit much. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're clear of the woods. The real reward comes at sunset when the light catches Worcester Cathedral in the distance and the river meanders like molten silver below.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you want to linger at the top with a flask of tea. There's no formal opening times or fees - it's just open countryside.
