Hundred Pool

Four acres of still water spread across what was once gravel workings, just outside Worcester. Hundred Pool might sound grander than it actually is - there's just the one lake here, not a hundred smaller ones as the name suggests.

Anglers make up most of the regular visitors, drawn by decent stocks of carp, bream and roach. The fishing's properly managed with day tickets available, though you'll need to check locally for current arrangements. Early mornings see the place at its best, when mist hangs low over the water and the only sounds are birdsong and the occasional splash.

Families walking the perimeter path will find it pleasant enough, but don't expect dramatic scenery. This is gentle Herefordshire countryside - flat fields, hedgerows, the odd horse in a paddock. Kids might enjoy spotting ducks and the occasional heron, but they'll likely get restless after thirty minutes unless they're keen on wildlife.

The lake works well as a quiet stop if you're staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area. Pennlake Vale Glamping and Ockeridge Rural Retreats are both close by, making this an easy morning stroll or evening wander. Just don't build your whole day around it - Hundred Pool's appeal lies in its simplicity rather than any grand spectacle.
