Wolds Village

You won't find much fanfare about Wolds Village - it's genuinely one of those places where you stumble upon something proper interesting without the crowds. Located near Driffield in East Yorkshire, this is an open-air museum showing how people actually lived in the Yorkshire Wolds over the past couple of centuries. The collection of relocated buildings - cottages, workshops, agricultural sheds - gives you a real sense of rural life that's far removed from the polished heritage sites you usually encounter.

Walking around takes about two hours if you're thorough, though you can knock it back to 90 minutes if you're just browsing. The buildings are genuinely fascinating if you care about vernacular architecture and social history. Families with kids aged eight and up will get something out of it; younger ones might find it a bit too static. There's interpretive signage throughout, and the staff know their stuff.

It's free to wander, which is brilliant. The grounds are accessible and well-maintained without being overly manicured. If you're camping nearby - East End Farm Campsite is only four miles away - this makes an excellent half-day activity that fills the gap between breakfast and supper without eating up your whole afternoon. The surrounding Wolds countryside is lovely for walking, so you could easily combine a visit here with some proper rambling through the landscape.
