Witley Court

The ruins of Witley Court rise out of the Worcestershire countryside like something from a Gothic novel - grand, crumbling, and oddly magnificent. This was once one of England's most ostentatious Victorian mansions, built by a wealthy industrialist and stuffed with every luxury money could buy. Now it's an English Heritage property, and what remains is basically a massive shell, though an impressive one.

Walking through the roofless rooms gives you a genuine sense of the place's former swagger. The scale is enormous - you can trace the layout of ballrooms, libraries, and bedrooms across multiple storeys. The real showstopper is outside: the Italian Renaissance garden with its ornamental pools and fountains, now overgrown but still visibly grand. Kids might find it a bit much - there's not loads to actually do beyond wandering and imagining - but history enthusiasts and photographers will spend a good couple of hours here.

It's free to access (English Heritage membership covers it, or pay on the day if not), and honestly, the lack of crowd control is part of the appeal. You can poke around at your own pace. Allow two to three hours if you're thorough. The nearest town is Worcester, just a short drive away, and if you're camping at Pennlake Vale Glamping or The Coppice Leisure Park nearby, this makes a solid half-day excursion. Best visited on a dry day - mud and crumbling stonework don't mix brilliantly.
