Withycombe Mill Wheel

You'll find the old mill wheel tucked away near Dawlish, a proper slice of Devon industrial heritage that most holidaymakers walking past on the coastal path completely miss. It's a working watermill from centuries back - the wheel itself is the star turn, a big wooden affair that still turns with the water flow when conditions are right. There's something genuinely satisfying about watching it work, the way the water catches and powers the whole contraption without a motor in sight.

The site is small, which is either a bonus or a letdown depending on what you're after. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting - it tells you something real about how this part of Devon actually functioned before tourism took over. Kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy mechanical things. Walkers on their way between the caravan parks - Dawlish Sands, Welcome Family, or Haven Devon Cliffs are all within a couple of miles - often use it as a natural stopping point rather than a destination in itself.

Access seems to be fairly open, though I'd check locally in Dawlish before setting out, as opening times aren't widely advertised. It won't take long - thirty minutes maximum if you're reading the information boards - so bundle it with a longer walk rather than planning your day around it. The surrounding area along the river is lovely for a stroll, and it breaks up a beach holiday nicely if you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby.
