Witch Wood

Walk into Witch Wood and you're stepping into something genuinely different from the usual Lancashire coastal fare. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you actually forget Blackpool's only a few miles away. The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric, with paths threading through ancient trees that look like they've got stories to tell. You'll spot everything from woodland birds to the occasional deer if you're lucky, and in spring the bluebells are excellent.

This works best for walkers and anyone after a bit of peace rather than thrill-seekers. Give yourself at least an hour, though two is better if you want to properly explore the main trails without feeling rushed. It's free to access, which is always a bonus when you're breaking up a week at one of the nearby caravan parks - Manor House Glamping or Pipers Height are closest at just over 3 miles away.

The reserve sits well within striking distance of the big holiday destinations around here. It's the kind of place families get restless after an hour if the kids aren't naturally into spotting woodland creatures, but serious walkers will appreciate the genuine escape it offers. Spring and early autumn are your best bets - summer gets a bit muggy in the dense bits, and winter's workable but muddy. Proper footwear essential either way. No facilities on site as far as I could tell, so bring what you need.
