Lake Point

You'll find Lake Point tucked away as a proper nature reserve just inland from Blackpool's tourist sprawl - a genuine breath of fresh air if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby. It's a wetland site where you can actually spot wildlife without fighting crowds, which is half the battle when you're holidaying on the Lancashire coast.

The lake itself draws birdwatchers like you wouldn't believe, especially during migration seasons. Even if ornithology isn't your thing, the walks around the water are straightforward enough, and the sheer quiet of it all comes as a shock after Blackpool's Golden Mile. You'll see herons, various ducks, and if you're lucky, some rarer visitors.

It's free to access and genuinely worth a couple of hours if you've got kids who need a break from fairgrounds and amusement arcades. Not the kind of place you'll spend all day at - the novelty wears off after an hour or so unless you're genuinely into birdwatching - but it slots in perfectly as a morning jaunt from Sea View or Donkey Creek Farm if the weather's decent. Bring binoculars if you have them. The paths get muddy when it rains, so check conditions first. Head early in the day for the best chance of spotting anything interesting.
