About Wireless Station

Standing at 325 metres above sea level on the Mendip Hills, this modest peak gets its name from the telecommunications mast that crowns its summit. Don't expect dramatic rocky outcrops or challenging scrambles - Wireless Station is more about the walk than the destination itself.

The real draw here is the panoramic view across the Somerset Levels, stretching all the way to the Bristol Channel on a clear day. You can spot Glastonbury Tor rising from the flatlands like something from a fairytale, while the Quantock Hills roll away to the west. It's properly spectacular stuff, though the mast does rather spoil the photos.

Walkers will appreciate the various routes up from Cheddar, ranging from gentle rambles through ancient woodland to steeper climbs across open grassland. Families with older children should manage fine, but toddlers might struggle with the distance. Allow two to three hours for a decent circular walk.

This makes a cracking addition to a Mendips holiday, especially if you're staying at one of the Cheddar campsites like Petruth Paddocks or The Batch. The peak works well as part of a longer ridge walk, or as a warm-up before tackling the more famous Cheddar Gorge. Just don't come expecting wilderness - that mast means you're never quite escaping civilisation up here.
