Black Rock

Standing 320 metres above the Mendip Hills, this limestone outcrop provides one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Somerset. The climb up from Cheddar village takes about 45 minutes through woodland paths that can get muddy after rain, but the panoramic views across the Somerset Levels make every step worthwhile.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot. On clear days you can see across to Exmoor and the Welsh mountains, while the patchwork of fields below creates a proper English countryside vista. Families with older children should manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rocky terrain near the summit.

Timing matters here. Early morning visits avoid the crowds and often catch mist rolling across the levels below. Late afternoon light is lovely for photos, but summer weekends can get busy with day-trippers from Bristol and Bath.

For those staying at nearby sites like Cheddar Woods Resort or Strawberryfield Park, this makes an excellent half-day adventure. The walk back down takes you past Jacob's Ladder if you fancy extending the route, and Cheddar's cafes are perfect for a post-hike cream tea. Pack layers though - it's always windier up top than you expect.
