Cheddar Gorge and Caves

The limestone cliffs rear up out of nowhere as you round the bend into Cheddar village - proper dramatic stuff, especially if you've been driving through flat Somerset countryside. The gorge stretches about two miles, with walks ranging from a gentle riverside stroll to a steep hike up the cliff face itself. Most visitors come for the show caves, which are underground and genuinely impressive - stalactites, stalagmites, that sort of thing. You'll spend a good hour or two down there if you do the full tour.

Walkers will have the best time here. The cliff-top paths offer views across the Mendips, and there's real effort required if you tackle the steeper routes - bring proper footwear. Families with young kids might find the cave tour sufficient, though toddlers can get restless in the dark. History types will appreciate that people have been living in these caves for thousands of years; there's a museum bit that covers the archaeology.

The main attraction charges admission - expect around £15-20 per person for the caves, though prices vary. Allow half a day minimum, longer if you're walking the gorge properly. Best visited on a weekday if you can manage it; weekends get rammed with coach parties.

Staying nearby at somewhere like Cheddar Woods Resort or Owley Woods Glamping puts you right on the doorstep. You could easily combine the gorge with walks in the wider Mendips, or pop into Cheddar village itself for the cheese shops and cafes. It's not subtle or particularly secret, but it's worth the trip if you like dramatic geology and a good walk.
