Wintercleuch Fell

The walk up Wintercleuch Fell from Moffat is straightforward and rewarding, though don't expect dramatic vistas from the summit itself. At 767 metres, it's modest by Scottish standards, but the moorland terrain and open aspect make it feel bigger than the height suggests. The fell sits in proper walking country, and the climb takes around two hours each way depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. Most people approach from the Moffat Water valley, and the path is generally well-trodden even if not always marked with the greatest clarity. Worth doing on a clear day when visibility stretches across the Lowlands. On a grey, wet afternoon, it's just a slog through heather and bog. No facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. Free to access, naturally. Families with younger legs might find the duration tedious unless they're keen walkers already. The appeal is less about the destination and more about the walk itself - proper open moorland where you won't see another soul for hours.
