Urchin Knowe

The walk up Urchin Knowe isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn your breath. This modest peak rises above the moorland near Moffat, offering proper views across the Lowlands if you time it right - clear days are rare, so don't expect panorama postcards every visit.

What you get is a straightforward hill walk, maybe 90 minutes round trip depending on fitness. The summit's modest - a cairn, moorland stretching away, nothing dramatic. That's rather the point. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities. You park near Moffat and walk. If you're after that rare Scottish thing - a quick, uncomplicated hill without the fuss - this delivers.

Walkers will appreciate it. Families with older kids can manage it. Young children might find the return stretch tedious. The moorland can be boggy in wet weather, so proper boots matter.

Stay at one of the caravan sites nearby - Howslack Farm is closest at 3.4 miles, though Riverside Holiday Park offers more facilities if you want comfort alongside your countryside time. If you're basing yourself near Moffat, Urchin Knowe works well as a morning outing before exploring the town itself.

Don't expect tourist infrastructure. This is Scotland doing what it does best - open moor, a hill to climb, and views earned rather than given. Worth the detour if you're in the area; probably not worth planning a trip around.
