Harthope Bank

The walk up Harthope Bank isn't going to break you, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs before you reach the top. This moorland peak sits just outside Moffat in the Scottish Lowlands, rising to a decent height with views across the rolling southern uplands that make the climb worthwhile. The terrain underfoot is typical hill-country stuff - grassy slopes and heather moorland, with the path well enough worn that you won't get lost, though it does get boggy after rain.

It's a solid outing for walkers who want a proper hill walk without needing a full day or specialist gear. Families with older kids will manage it fine; the younger ones might find the gradient tedious. Most people allow between two and three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. Nearby Moffat has the caravan sites at Howslack Farm and Riverside Holiday Park within a few miles if you're basing yourself in the area. This is proper walking country, and Harthope Bank works well as part of a wider exploration of the Lowland hills rather than a standalone trip. Go early if the weather's decent - the wind can arrive quickly up here, and mist rolls in without warning.
