Winkle Street

Climbing the steep chalk cliffs near Yarmouth leads you to one of the Isle of Wight's most rewarding viewpoints. Winkle Street offers sweeping panoramas across the Solent towards the Hampshire coastline, with Lymington clearly visible on clear days. The name refers to the old path that winds up from the shoreline - locals have been making this climb for generations.

Photographers will love the golden hour views, particularly at sunset when the water catches the light. It's a proper workout getting up here, mind you. The path is well-defined but relentlessly uphill for about twenty minutes. Worth every step though - the vista opens up dramatically once you reach the top.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a hike will find this rewarding. Toddlers might struggle with the gradient, and there's precious little to entertain them once you're up there beyond the view itself. Dog walkers frequent this spot, so expect company on weekends.

The viewpoint works brilliantly as part of a longer coastal walk or as a quick detour if you're staying at nearby parks like The Orchards Holiday Caravan and Camping Park or Tapnell Farm Holiday Destination. Allow an hour return trip from Yarmouth, longer if you want to properly soak up the scenery. Best avoided in high winds - it can get properly blustery up there.
