Little Down

Standing at just 77 metres above sea level, this modest chalk down offers one of the most rewarding short walks on the western Isle of Wight. The gentle climb from the Yarmouth road takes barely twenty minutes, but the views across the Solent to the mainland are absolutely cracking on a clear day.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this spot. The path is well-defined but can be muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. From the summit, you can pick out the Needles to the southwest and watch the constant parade of yachts threading through Yarmouth harbour below.

This isn't a mountain expedition - more like a pleasant leg-stretch that rewards modest effort with proper panoramic views. Allow an hour for the round trip, including time to catch your breath at the top and possibly spot red squirrels in the surrounding woodland.

Perfect timing for those staying at nearby sites like Tapnell Farm or The Orchards. The walk makes an excellent morning activity before heading to Yarmouth for lunch, and it's particularly lovely in early evening when the light catches the water. Kids under eight might find it a bit steep, but anyone reasonably mobile will manage the ascent without drama.
