Mottistone Down

Climbing to 258 metres above sea level, this chalky hilltop delivers some of the finest views on the Isle of Wight's western coast. From the summit, you'll see across the Solent to the New Forest, with Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower visible on clear days.

Walkers will find the ascent properly rewarding - it's steep enough to get the heart pumping but manageable for anyone reasonably fit. The grassland up here feels wild and open, a lovely contrast to the more manicured parts of the island. Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will get the most from it, though toddlers might struggle with the gradient.

Getting there requires a bit of navigation as there's no formal car park - most people approach via the bridleway from Brighstone or tackle it as part of the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. Allow a good hour each way if you're walking from the nearest road.

The down sits just west of Yarmouth, making it an excellent day out if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Tapnell Farm or Camp Wight. It's free to explore and accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer the clearest air for those panoramic vistas. Worth the effort if you fancy earning your views rather than simply driving to them.
