Wimpole Home Farm

The farmyard at Wimpole feels properly authentic - you're walking through genuine Victorian and Georgian working spaces, not some theme park approximation. Cattle in the byres, chickens pecking about, the whole operation running much as it would have two centuries back. The National Trust has restored it brilliantly, and the difference between this and a static museum is that you can actually see the animals and smell the hay rather than just reading about it behind glass.

It's a working demonstration farm, so there's real activity happening. You'll see staff doing proper farm tasks - mucking out, feeding, tending crops on the surrounding fields. Children can handle it easily enough, though it's not one of those petting zoos where every animal comes to you. Expect to be on your feet for a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, wandering between the different buildings and watching demonstrations.

From Royston it's a straightforward drive, and it pairs well with Wimpole Hall itself if you're making a day of it - the hall and farm sit on the same estate. The glamping at Guilden Gate or the caravan park at Shepreth Mill are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days. Go in spring or early autumn when the farm's most active and the weather's reasonable for standing about in open yards. Summer can be a bit much if you're not keen on heat and flies.
