Willy Lott's Cottage

The thatched cottage that appears in Constable's The Hay Wain sits beside the River Stour, just outside Colchester, looking much as it did when the artist painted it in 1821. It's a working farmhouse, so you can't actually go inside, but the view from the footpath tells you everything you need to know about why Constable was so obsessed with this particular spot.

Walkers get the most from this one. The cottage itself takes five minutes to view properly - you'll stand at the gate, take your photos, maybe sketch if you're that way inclined - but the real draw is the riverside walk. The surrounding footpaths are lovely, particularly if you time it for late afternoon when the light hits the water properly. It's free, naturally, since you're viewing it from public land.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Ardleigh or Strangers, this makes a decent afternoon ramble rather than a main event. Bring the family if they're into art history, though truthfully the cottage is a working farm and fairly quiet - kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already Constable enthusiasts. The Colchester area has enough other attractions to justify the visit as part of a broader day out rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour if you're exploring the surrounding paths, twenty minutes if you're just after the Instagram shot.
