Broadfields

Grassland stretches away from the footpath here, dotted with the occasional oak and edged by dense hedgerow that hums with wildlife in summer. This nature reserve east of Colchester feels properly wild despite being just minutes from the A12 - a slice of old Essex countryside that's managed to dodge the suburban sprawl.

Birders will love it. The mix of rough pasture and woodland edge pulls in yellowhammers, skylarks, and kestrels, plus the usual suspects like goldfinches and linnets. Early morning visits in spring deliver the best bird activity, though you'll spot something interesting year-round.

Kids might find it a bit tame after an hour unless they're properly into nature spotting. The paths aren't buggy-friendly, so think twice if you're hauling pushchairs. Dog walkers fare better - there's enough space for a proper leg-stretch without disturbing ground-nesting birds.

Practical stuff: parking is limited to roadside spots, and there are no facilities to speak of. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander, longer if you're serious about wildlife watching. The reserve works brilliantly as a morning detour if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Mersea Island or Coopers Beach - a proper contrast to beach time.
