Wigmore Wood

Wigmore Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Stafford - the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. You're walking through mixed deciduous forest with good paths that don't demand fell boots or serious fitness, just a decent pair of trainers and maybe an hour to spare. The canopy gets thick in summer, which means you're never going to overheat, and the undergrowth keeps things interesting without being impenetrable. There's enough room to let kids run ahead without losing sight of them, and the trees are tall enough that even restless teenagers won't complain within the first twenty minutes. It's free to access, naturally - you just turn up and go. The place works best as a gentle half-day escape rather than the centrepiece of your holiday. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Oakland, Worfe Camping, or Ted's Farm are all within five miles or so - this fills a wet afternoon brilliantly. Or if the sun's out and you want a break from more manicured attractions, it's a refreshing change of pace. Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or riverside walks. This is about being among trees, breathing properly, and remembering why woods are calming. The nearest toilet facilities are back in Stafford, so plan accordingly. It's the sort of place that's worth knowing about if you're in the area for a few days, rather than something you'd specifically drive an hour to reach.
