Coneygreaves Plantation

Walk into Coneygreaves and you're immediately swallowed by towering conifers and broadleaf woodland that feels proper remote, despite sitting just outside Stafford. The plantation is a working forest - you'll see forestry management in action, which is either fascinating or a bit sobering depending on how you feel about commercial timber operations. There are established trails threading through the mature trees, the kind of walking where the air feels different and your phone signal vanishes, which is half the appeal.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants a woodland walk without the National Trust crowds or admission charges. Families with older kids will enjoy it - there's proper navigating required, so under-fives might find it dull. Dog walkers absolutely love the place; muddy paws are expected. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent loop, though you can knock it back to an hour for a quick blast through.

Best visited after rain when the forest smells right and the ground's springy underfoot. Summer can feel claustrophobic - go autumn or winter instead. If you're basing yourself at High Onn Holiday Park, this makes an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. Copper Beech Glamping is a bit further out but still within range for a half-day visit. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's honest woodland on your doorstep, and that's worth knowing about.
