Newport Plantation

Walking into Newport Plantation near Stafford, you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. This isn't some manicured country estate - it's a proper working forest where you can actually lose yourself for an afternoon without bumping into crowds.

The plantation itself is straightforward: rows of conifers and mixed woodland that create natural corridors perfect for walking. The paths are well-trodden enough to follow, but they're not Disney-fied with signage every ten metres. You navigate by instinct and the occasional marker. For families with kids aged seven and up, this works well - there's enough space to let them run ahead without panic. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after an hour or so.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that you're walking through land with genuine forestry heritage. This is working countryside, not a theme park version of it. Bring proper shoes though - it can be boggy in patches, especially after rain.

Allow between ninety minutes and two hours depending on how far you venture. There's no café, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Being so close to Oakland Holiday Park and High Onn Holiday Park makes it ideal if you're staying in either - you can knock it into a day that includes picnicking in the car park and exploring Stafford's town centre afterwards.

It's free and uncharted, which means no Instagram crowds. That's either a massive plus or slightly eerie, depending on your outlook.
