Tong Rough

Tong Rough is a proper woodland walk just outside Stafford - the kind of place that's genuinely quiet if you time it right. It's forest in the truest sense: ancient trees, woodland floor thick with leaf litter, and enough space that you won't trip over other visitors even on weekends.

You're looking at a straightforward ramble through mature woodland. There are paths, though they're not manicured - more the worn-earth type that locals have been using for years. It's ideal if you want to shake off the caravan site cobwebs without driving far. Oakland Holiday Park is just three miles away, and frankly, a couple of hours here beats another afternoon lounging about the static.

The woodland draws walkers rather than families chasing attractions. If your kids need constant stimulation, they'll be bored within thirty minutes. But if you've got teenagers or adults who actually like a quiet forest walk, this works well. There's something restorative about it - birdsong, dappled light, the smell of damp soil. No gimmicks, no visitor centre, just trees.

Allow two to three hours if you're genuinely exploring. There's no clear loop, so you'll end up retracing steps, which is fine. Free to access as far as anyone knows. Best visited mid-week or early morning when Stafford isn't sending its leisure traffic out this way. It pairs nicely with a broader Staffordshire walking holiday - Ted's Farm and High Onn are both close enough to base yourself and make day trips out to various green spaces.
