Widdrington Skatepark

The concrete bowl at Widdrington cuts straight into the Northumberland landscape like someone's dropped a proper skatepark into the middle of nowhere. It's free, it's open all hours, and on a decent afternoon you'll find everything from teenagers launching airs to BMX riders testing their nerve on the transitions. The park itself sits quietly enough - you're not overwhelmed by crowds or facilities, which some might see as authentic and others as a bit basic.

Walkers won't find much to detain them here. This is genuinely for riders and their supporters. Skateboarding families will appreciate having a legitimate spot within striking distance of Morpeth without the drive to the coast or Newcastle. The setup is functional rather than fancy - a mix of bowls and street lines that keeps things interesting if you're any good at all. Budget an hour or so if you're watching someone else skate, longer if you're actually having a go yourself.

Situated roughly four miles from both Felmoor Country Park and Bockenfield Country Holiday Park, Widdrington works well as a mid-afternoon break on a longer Northumberland week. Neither of the nearby parks is particularly close in spirit - you're trading green rolling acres for tarmac and community - but if you've got a skater in the family who needs an outlet between countryside walks and seaside days, it's worth knowing about. The real appeal here is that it's there at all, unpretentious and genuinely free.
