East Chevington Nature Reserve

The marshes at East Chevington stretch out flat and wide, the kind of place where you can actually hear the wind. It's a proper nature reserve - reedy grassland and wetland pools where wading birds do their thing, and in winter the light hits the water in that particular Northumberland way that makes photography worth bothering with.

You're here for the birds, primarily. Lapwings, redshanks, the odd marsh harrier if you're lucky and patient. Spring and autumn bring migrating species, so if you're into twitching or just enjoy watching wildlife go about its business, those seasons justify the trip. Summer is quieter - the birds disperse - but families with kids who like puddle-hopping and spotting dragonflies won't feel cheated.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means bringing binoculars and a decent pair of wellies is non-negotiable. Allow a couple of hours to properly walk the perimeter. Free access, naturally. The reserve lies just north of Morpeth, making it an easy add-on if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Cresswell Towers or Hillside Huts are within striking distance.

Honestly? It's not dramatic or photogenic in the Instagram sense. But if you want to actually experience the Northumberland coast ecosystem without the crowds that swamp some of the flashier spots, East Chevington does the job well. Suits walkers and bird enthusiasts far more than those after a quick postcard moment.
