Wholestone Hill

The walk up Wholestone Hill from Elland isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your thighs. What makes it worthwhile is the view across West Yorkshire once you're up there - proper expansive moorland stretching out, with the town tucked below. On a clear day you can see for miles. The summit itself is modest, no dramatic rocks or trig point to photograph, but that's fine. There's something honest about Yorkshire moorland peaks like this one.

It's decent for a family walk if your kids are reasonably fit - maybe an hour there and back depending on pace - though younger children might grumble about the incline. Walkers will appreciate it as a quick leg-stretch between longer routes across the Pennines. The route is straightforward enough, muddy in patches after rain.

Free to access, naturally. Best visited on a morning when the light's good and the moorland's not shrouded in cloud. If you're staying at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park - right on the doorstep really - this is an obvious choice for an evening stroll. The other sites nearby, Secret Valley Escapes and Holme Valley Camping, are close enough that adding this walk into your schedule makes sense. It won't take a huge chunk out of your day, but it breaks up the campsite routine nicely.
