Whitespots Hill

The walk up Whitespots Hill from Steading takes you through proper Lowland countryside - moorland, rough grassland, the sort of terrain that looks deceptively gentle until your legs start complaining. It's not high, which is exactly what makes it appealing if you're after a straightforward hill walk without the scrambling or exposure that comes with the bigger peaks further north.

On a clear day the views stretch across Dumfries & Galloway, rolling and open rather than dramatic. You won't get postcard drama, but you will get a real sense of the landscape's scale. The walk itself is accessible enough for reasonably fit families, though it's more for walkers than casual strollers - allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Red Squirrel Campsite or The Outdoor Hotel are both within a mile or so - this makes a solid morning's walk before heading back for lunch. Burnside of Ae Glamping and Penpont Holiday Park further out could work too if you're combining it with other activities in the area. It's the sort of walk that works best in decent weather; on a grey day it's functional rather than memorable.

Go if you want a genuine leg-stretch with proper views, not if you're expecting a showstopper. The Lowlands are understated, and Whitespots Hill doesn't pretend otherwise.
