Glenbrae Wood

Walking into Glenbrae Wood near Steading feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. This is genuine Scottish lowland forest - tall conifers mixed with native woodland, the kind of place where you hear more birdsong than voices even on a decent day.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than anything fancy. The paths wind through dense trees with decent views opening up as you move through different sections. Bring boots unless it's been bone dry for weeks - the ground holds water and can get boggy in patches. Most people get through the main circuit in about an hour and a half, which is enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere without demanding a full afternoon.

Walkers will genuinely enjoy this. It's the kind of wood where you notice things - fungi, different tree types, the occasional red squirrel if you're lucky and quiet. It won't blow your mind with dramatic vistas, but it's proper woodland walking rather than a manicured trail. Families with younger kids might find it a bit heavy going if the paths are muddy.

Staying nearby at The Outdoor Hotel puts you just half a mile away, or Red Squirrel Campsite is a couple of miles out if you want a base camp. Newbridge Country Park and Landal Barnsoul offer more structured holiday park setups further afield. Free access as far as I can tell - no obvious charges or gates - though best to check before driving out. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light filters properly through the canopy.
