Blackcraig hill

The walk up Blackcraig Hill takes you through proper Lowlands terrain - rolling moorland that doesn't announce itself as dramatic, but grows on you the higher you climb. It's not a massive undertaking; most walkers will be up and down in a couple of hours, which makes it ideal if you're based near Steading and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day expedition.

Newbridge Country Park and Penpont Holiday Park further out offer base camp options if you're making a longer trip of it. The walk is free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though winter can turn the moorland boggy and murky. Spring or autumn tend to be sweeter for visiting.
