Barnmuir Hill

The walk up Barnmuir Hill takes you through proper rolling farmland, the kind of landscape that makes you remember why people move to Dumfries and Galloway in the first place. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Southern Uplands proper - but the views from the top sweep across the Lowlands with genuine character. On a clear day you can pick out the valley folds and distant ridges that give this region its understated appeal.

Count on about an hour and a half for the round trip from Steading, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. The terrain is manageable for families with older kids, though the ground can be boggy in patches after rain. There's no café or facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat if you're planning to sit and take in the views properly.

This works particularly well if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Red Squirrel Campsite or Burnside of Ae Glamping are both within easy driving distance - and fancy a straightforward morning walk without committing to anything too ambitious. It's the sort of hill that doesn't demand much but rewards a bit of effort, especially if you're breaking up a park holiday with some leg-stretching. The Lowlands don't shout about themselves, but that's rather the point.
