White Hill

The walk up White Hill from Dorking is a proper leg-stretcher, but the effort pays off with views across the Surrey Hills that remind you why this corner of the South East has such a loyal following. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District - but it's solid walking territory with enough elevation to make your calves work.

The hill itself is woodland mostly, beech and oak, so you're not scrambling up bare rock. Allow a good hour up from the town, longer if you're taking your time and stopping to admire the views across Box Hill towards the Mole Valley. On a clear day you can see proper distances. In autumn it's particularly good - the light through the trees and the ground covered in leaves.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself like some peaks are; it's part of the Surrey Hills circuit. If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Alderstead Heath or Betchworth Fort Park are closest - it's an obvious addition to a morning or afternoon's rambling. Families with older kids would manage it fine, though little ones might find it a bit steep for what is essentially a local hill walk.

Free to walk, naturally. The real value is in combining it with the broader Surrey Hills National Landscape trails rather than making it your sole focus. Go mid-week if possible - weekends can feel busy with Dorking walkers doing the same route.
