Dunley Hill

Views across the Surrey Hills don't get much better than this. Standing at 273 metres, Dunley Hill rewards the steep climb through beech woodland with proper panoramic vistas stretching from the North Downs to the Weald beyond. It's a proper workout getting up here, mind you - the ascent from Dorking will leave most people breathing hard.

Walkers and fitness enthusiasts will love this one. The hill sits within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you're guaranteed decent scenery even on the way up. Families with older children who can handle the climb will find it well worth the effort, though I wouldn't attempt it with pushchairs or very young ones.

Bring a flask and some sandwiches - there's nothing quite like earning your lunch with a good hill walk. The summit itself is wooded, so the best views require a bit of exploring to find the right clearings. Early morning visits offer the clearest air and fewest crowds.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Embers Camping at Polesden Lacey or the Surrey Hills Yurts, this makes for a cracking half-day adventure. Allow three hours return from Dorking town centre, including time to properly appreciate those views you've worked so hard for.
