Denbies House (site of)

Scattered foundations and raised earthworks mark where a grand Tudor mansion once stood on the slopes above Dorking. What remains of Denbies House feels more like detective work than traditional sightseeing - you'll need imagination to picture the elaborate halls and gardens that impressed visitors for centuries before demolition in 1953.

History enthusiasts will appreciate hunting for clues among the overgrown terraces and wall remnants. The site sits on private land within the sprawling Denbies Wine Estate, so access depends on public footpaths that skirt the main areas. From certain angles you can still make out the formal garden layouts and servants' quarters foundations.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless combined with the nearby vineyard tours or walks through Surrey Hills National Landscape. The archaeological remains aren't signposted or interpreted, making this more of a specialist interest than a crowd-pleaser.

Best approached as part of a longer ramble from Dorking, perhaps linking with Polesden Lacey or the network of bridleways around Norbury Park. The views across the Mole Valley remain spectacular - probably the same outlook that drew the original builders to this spot. Surrey Hills Yurts and other nearby camping options make decent bases for exploring this corner of the North Downs, though the house site itself won't detain you for more than half an hour.
